Poetry - Patricia Grange

Al-Qatt Al-Asiri (or nagash painting or majlis painting) - An Arabic art style originated in Saudi Arabia and Yemen for the decoration of majlis. UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity 2017. “… Traditionally female interior wall decoration, an ancient art form considered as a key element of the identity of the region of Asir. It is a spontaneous art technique carried out largely by women today in the community that involves decorating the interior walls of their houses, specifically rooms for visiting guests. Women invite female relatives of various age groups to help them in their homes, thereby transmitting this knowledge from generation to generation. The base is usually white gypsum and the patterns consist of icons of geometric shapes and symbols. In the past, only women practised the element, but nowadays male and female artists, designers, interior designers and architects practise it, including on other surfaces. The art enhances social bonding and solidarity among the community and has a therapeutic effect on its practitioners. The application of the art in most households ensures its viability within the community, and local individuals have created galleries within their houses in order to safeguard it.”

Chinese calligraphy – The supreme visual art form
“In China, from a very early period, calligraphy was considered not just a form of decorative art; rather, it was viewed as the supreme visual art form, was more valued than painting and sculpture, and ranked alongside poetry as a means of self-expression and cultivation. How one wrote, in fact, was as important as what one wrote. To understand how calligraphy came to occupy such a prominent position, it is necessary to consider a variety of factors, such as the materials used in calligraphy and the nature of the Chinese written script as well as the esteem in which writing and literacy are held in traditional China.”

The Four Treasures of the Study 文房四宝 (also known as the Four Friends of the Study) are respectively brushes, Chinese ink, paper, and inkstones.
Sutor, ne supra crepidam
Pliny the Elder reported in his Naturalis Historia [XXXV] that a shoemaker allegedly pointed out to Apelle de Cos, a Greek painter, a defect in his representation of a sandal. It is said that Appelle would have rectified it according to this wise opinion. However the shoemaker decided to go on and expressed an opinion on many other aspects of the picture. To which Appelle would have replied “sutor, ne supra crepidam” ("shoemaker, not beyond the sandal"). We do hope this doesn’t mean that he ignored the intrinsic quality of a good shoemaker by virtue of his ability to deduce many things from the way we treat our shoes. But this is of course another story ...
