Terakoya and tenarai-sho: a wide range of different institutions

The names terakoya and tenarai-sho covered a wide range of different institutions. Schools varied considerably in size, in scope of tuition offered, according to whether they were designed primarily for samurai or commoner children, and according to the relative extent to which the desire to earn a living or the desire to do good predominated in their teachers’ motives.

We, the adults, failed in our duty to defend all your rights…

We, the adults, have unfortunately failed in our duty to defend all your rights. One third of you suffered from malnutrition before the age of 5. A quarter of you have not been vaccinated against any disease. Almost one fifth of you do not go to school (...) It is up to us, adults, to correct all these situations that reflect our shortcomings.
